The most common AdBlue problems in light and heavy duty vehicles

what is adblue, remove adblue

AdBlue is an aqueous solution of urea (a relatively pure chemical mixture) used in modern diesel vehicles to sharply reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the exhaust. The liquid is injected into the exhaust system before the selective catalytic converter (SCR). Under the influence of the high temperature and the catalyst, the urea breaks down to ammonia, which reacts with the NOx and converts them to harmless nitrogen (N₂) and water - this is the key process that allows engines to meet standards such as Euro 5/6.

How the system works - in brief

The vehicle has a separate AdBlue tank, a dosing pump, an injector in the exhaust pipe and a set of sensors (level, temperature, pressure, quality). The ECU (computer) monitors the data and adjusts the amount of AdBlue depending on engine operating conditions - more at high loads, less when cruising in place, etc.

The most common problems in practice

  1. Freezing and crystallisation - AdBlue freezes at about -11 °C. In cold weather, the system relies on heaters; if they don't work, tubing and injectors can lose mobility or become clogged with crystals.

  2. Clogging and crystalline deposits - deposits of salt/carbon compounds remain on nozzles and pipes during burning/spraying. This leads to incorrect dosing.

  3. Pump or filter failure - mechanical failures cause pressure loss and erroneous signals.

  4. Sensory errors - false values from the level gauge or so-called quality sensor trigger messages and often the vehicle enters "limiting" mode (reduced power or refusal to start after AdBlue exhaustion).

  5. Contamination - filling with uncertified liquid product or dirt can damage the system.

  6. Electronics/soft - software bugs and updates/incompatibilities also result in error messages.

Driver behaviour - how people react

Many drivers take logical steps: cleaning/changing injectors and filters, getting a diagnostic in the workshop, changing a pump, filling up with quality AdBlue. Some look for cheap off-the-shelf pumps or parts, but this is often a short-term solution and leads to recurring problems. There are also drivers/services looking for software options (emulators) or mechanical "suspensions" - these give temporary comfort but are illegal in most countries and harmful to the environment.

AdBlue problems and software solutions

The AdBlue system is part of Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), which reduces emissions in diesel engines. It works by injecting a special solution of urea and water into the exhaust to reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx). Despite the environmental benefits, in practice this system often creates headaches.

Most common problems:

  • Freezing of the liquid at low temperatures, which blocks nozzles and hoses.

  • Defective sensors (level, temperature, pressure, liquid quality).

  • Pump or heater failure.

  • Clogging of the injector by crystallization.

  • Software errors where the ECU reports a problem and limits power.

On most vehicles, when a fault occurs in the AdBlue system, the computer limits power or the number of starts until the system is repaired. This often causes inconvenience, especially for trucks and vans that are on the move on long routes.

How to solve software problems (legal aspect):
Service stations that have original diagnostic software can:

  • Do a full diagnostic and clean up the errors.

  • Update the ECU software with the latest versions from the manufacturer that improve AdBlue management.

  • Perform system adaptation or reset after pump/sensor replacement.

  • Run test modes to verify that the dosing system is working properly.

How to solve software "illegally":
Some people choose an alternative route - software shutdown of AdBlue (so called off or delete). This is done by reprogramming the ECU, which changes the logic and the computer no longer monitors the system. In other cases, emulators are used that feed false data. This solution does remove the problems and costs, but it is illegal and leads to higher emissions and risk of fines.
