What does "ECU connection broke" mean?
This error indicates that the connection between the diagnostics and the ECU module is interrupted or unstable. This does not necessarily mean that the ECU is completely "dead". In many cases the module works partially, but:
not responsible for communication
restarts
loses power
interrupts the CAN line
It is important to understand that the diagnosis is not the source of the problembut simply the first place where the symptom becomes visible.
Typical symptoms in this pattern
In Mitsubishi Colt Plus 1.5L, the following symptoms are most often observed:
no connection to ECU via OBD
the link appears and disappears
the engine does not start
burns, but goes out
no real errors in other modules
other systems work normally
This points directly to a problem with the ECU itself or its power supply, not to a sensor or peripheral.
Don't blame ECU right away
It is a big mistake to directly conclude "ECU is gone". With this model very often the ECU is the victim, not the cause.
First they are checked:
battery and voltage under load
masses to the engine and body
power fuses
main relay for ECU
If all this is wrong and the connection is lost again - then go deeper.
The most common real cause: unstable power supply to the ECU
With the Colt Plus, the problem often comes from:
interruption on power line
oxidized connector
internal problem in ECU power supply
The ECU module can have:
12V input
but unstable internal lines
When these lines "fall" even for milliseconds:
communication stops
ECU restarts
diagnostics loses connection
And just then the message appears "ECU connection broke.".
Communication - an often underestimated factor
In this model, the ECU communicates with the other modules via CAN. Even minimal problem on CAN line can lead to:
lack of connection
unstable communication
false impression of "dead ECU"
The reasons are usually:
moisture
oxidation
ECU board has small cracks
problems around the CAN driver inside the module
