Diagnosis and behaviour of errors P0601 and P0606 in Bosch 0281013417 EDC16C39

The electronic control unit Bosch 0281013417 EDC16C39 is widely used in diesel engines from various manufacturers and plays a central role in controlling the fuel system, ignition, emissions and communication with other control modules in the vehicle. Thanks to the CAN-Bus architecture, this ECU exchanges real-time data with other systems such as ABS, dashboard, immobilizer and transmission. Due to this key role, any malfunction in its operation can lead to serious functional problems.

Among the most critical errors recorded in this model are P0601 - "Device is damaged" и P0606 - "Engine ECU - functional failure". These codes are considered internal control unit errors and usually indicate a problem not directly related to an external sensor or actuator.

A characteristic symptom accompanying these errors is periodic inability to start the enginewhich lacks communication with the ECU. In these cases, the unit is not recognized by the diagnostic system and is not present as an active participant in the CAN-Bus network. This leads to secondary symptoms such as no data on the dashboard, blocking of the immobiliser and recording of communication errors in other modules.

Error P0601 is usually associated with a violation of the internal memory or logical integrity of the control unit. The ECU performs a self-check at each power-up and during operation, comparing expected and actual control values. When a discrepancy is detected, a protection mode or complete shutdown of the unit is activated.

Error P0606 indicates more general functional instability. It may be the result of internal data processing that does not meet the allowable parameters. On the EDC16C39, this type of error is often associated with an interruption in the normal duty cycle, causing the ECU to temporarily or completely drop out of the communications network.

It is particularly important that the behaviour described is Intermittently - the vehicle may run normally at one point and not start at all at another. This often makes diagnostics difficult, as active errors are not always detected when communication is present, and the ECU cannot be accessed when communication is absent.

The diagnostic approach to such symptoms starts with checking the power supply and the ECU tables. Even minor fluctuations or temporary interruptions can cause internal processes to restart or lock up. The integrity of the CAN-Bus lines is also checked, as incorrect communication can be both a cause and a consequence of unstable operation of the unit.

When the power supply and communication infrastructure are operational, attention turns to the internal state of the ECU. In the case of the EDC16C39, it is known that certain operating conditions, temperature loads or aging of electronic components can cause instability of the internal logic circuits. This explains why the problem occurs sporadically and often without external intervention.

In situations where the ECU is not recognised by the other modules on the CAN-Bus, the vehicle enters a protection mode in which starting is blocked as a preventive measure. This behavior is intended to prevent uncontrolled engine operation in the absence of centralized control.

The timely diagnosis of errors P0601 и P0606 is essential, as prolonged operation under such instability may result in complete loss of ECU functionality. Early detection of the problem allows an informed decision to be made on follow-up action without sudden vehicle failure.
